Malaysia's state of Johor derived its name from the Arabic word Jauhar meaning "precious jewel". Located at the southern tip of Peninsular Malaysia, it has earned its status as Malaysia's southern gateway. It is well linked to Singapore by road and rail. Johor's close location to Singapore has made it popular among Singaporeans and other international tourists. It is Malaysia's only state with a coastline stretching all along the Straits of Melaka to the South China Sea. The state capital of Johor is Johor Bahru, literally, "new Johor".
